A solar cell provides little value for our everyday living. It is only when we join solar cells together into arrays or panels that we see their benefit of delivering huge volumes of electricity.

Before you build a solar panel at home, it is best to consider first the number of solar panels that you will need. The number of solar panels for home use is determined by the power that you want to have.

For example, powering your entire house would need more solar panels than when you would only want to power a certain room. If you are unsure of the number of solar panels, you can just use online calculators over the Internet or an all-inclusive diy solar guide. They will give you an idea of how to build solar panels as well as how many solar panels and equipments you will need.

If you want to build a solar panel at home, there are actually several diy solar guides, accompanied by several diy solar panels, that you can find over the net.

The basic diy solar kits to use are the saw, screwdriver and drill. Aside from that, you will also need the wood glue and silicone caulk. Additionally, you will need wire strippers, wire cutters, soldering iron, and a solder for the wiring. Most of these tools can be found in your local store or hardware.

The steps below teach you how to build a solar panel at home

1. Obtain Solar Panels - The first thing that you should do is to get a hold of your solar cells. As standards go, the 3×6” solar cell is enough to generate 0.5 volt and 3.5 amps. The usual preference of people is a solar panel that has an output of 18 volts. To achieve this, you will need to have 36 cells per panel. You can find this on several auctions sites over the Internet.

However, watch out for those that are graded “B” and/or panels that have lesser quality cells. You can find them usually cheaper than the A grades, but they produce less energy than the high quality ones. If at all possible, buy the cells that have been already tabbed.

2. Build a Container - Containers are needed to hold the cells of your diy solar panels. Though there are several options, the easiest thing to work on is wood. Before anything else, you will need a layout for your cells, as well as the dimensions you’d need for the box.

The suggested ones to use would be plywood for the back, and ¾ square wood for the sides. Cut additional wood and make it fit inside the box. You will also need to cut Plexiglass or lexan to use as a cover for the box. Paint them all and screw them together.

3. Wire the cells - Wire 26 cells together to form a series and achieve the 18 volts that you are aiming for. This will be easier if you’d just buy tabbed cells, and then solder all the tabs together. You may also want to solder the tabs on a diode, which will allow the power to flow in just one direction.

4. Attach the Cells - Apply silicone caulk to the middle back of each cell. Lay them all out in your layout, and glue each of them on your layout. Leave the caulk to dry and set.

5. Final Construction - Drill a hole through the bottom of the container and allow for the wires to come out. Afterwards, glue your substrate that have attached solar cells into the made container, and put your plexiglass to cover the container.

Portable solar power applied to outdoors devices and gadgets is very interesting for people who like to spend time in the mountains and the countryside. The outdoors spirit and the sun’s energy are a great combination. You can now count on portable solar power gadgets to have a more comfortable camping experience without having to use a single drop of non-renewable fuel.

There are a number of solar power gadgets being launched on the market now. These solar energy appliances are very useful for camping lovers, but home owners can use them too, in their gardens or inside their homes, why not?

In spite of a few differences in their specific operation, the main portable solar power systems used in these solar devices are either one single solar cell incorporated into the gadget, or a typical solar module arrangement that charges the batteries that send off energy to the portable appliances.

Types of solar powered devices

Here are some examples of portable devices running on solar power systems that can be extremely useful for people who like being in the wilderness or just camping. When you own them, you do not need to carry propane gas or conventional batteries anymore.

Solar watches - Are you a camper, a hiker or an athlete? Solar watches are a must. Sun-powered watches are growing in popularity as portable solar power devices, if I may call them so. These portable solar power gadgets grab the sun’s rays during the day to charge batteries that enable their use round the clock. Today, outdoors enthusiasts can also include an alarm clock powered by solar energy in their backpacks. No longer do they need to be afraid of missing the last train home.

Solar Radios - Portable solar power devices that are a radio and a flashlight at the same time are also becoming widespread. They are used for emergency situations too. There are solar radios built to get emergency broadcast signals and others that are capable of receiving different FM and AM channels.

Solar lanterns - Solar powered lanterns are perfect for camping use. Instead of having to worry all day about batteries going dead, hikers and campers can charge these devices all day long and utilize them at night.

Solar cooking tools - Solar powered cooking tools are widely used for camping and other applications. There are various types of solar cooking equipment available. For example, there are portable solar power barbecue grills that allow you to cook only during daylight. On the other hand, there are solar cooking appliances that grab the sun, charge the batteries when there is light, and allow campers to cook in the darkness too.

Solar GPS systems - These small solar power devices are often a camper’s best friend. The solar powered systems operate much like watches as far as power harvesting is concerned.

Solar powered battery chargers for cell phones - Solar battery chargers are very practical for outdoors enthusiasts, because they never have to be afraid of running out of power for their cell phones wherever they are. If you are a camper and find yourself in an emergency situation, these portable solar devices are worth their weight in gold.

It may not seem so, but these little portable solar power gadgets and appliances mean a huge progress in camping security and enjoyment. It is fantastic that we can enjoy nature and more comfort at the same time. It is remarkable that such small portable solar power gadgets allow any outdoor enthusiast to be friendlier towards the environment.

Solar power lights have recently become a sought after green solution in the field of outdoor landscaping. Homeowners and business operators that try solar lighting systems love them.

Generally, traditional native landscaping concepts are friendlier towards the precious resources of the Earth like water. This is the reason why the more ancient views are now being implemented throughout the world and solar power lights are being included in greener design solutions.

Solar power lights show many advantages in the field of outdoor landscaping, gardens and patios. These self-contained systems can give off the illumination that home and business owners wish to have without a negative impact on the environment.

Click here if you’d prefer to watch and listen to this overview of solar power lights for outdoors in video format.

Solar power lights for outdoor usage can vary in style quite a lot but the standard concept usually includes these components:

A solar panel or panels to drive the systems - In the case of outdoor lighting, solar panels are generally small and are designed to only absorb and accumulate enough energy to power the lights included in a kit. These panels are also created to harmonize as much as possible with outdoor surroundings.

An inverter and a battery - Most of the times solar power lights for outdoor usage comprise an inverter and a battery. The task of these elements included in the kits is to transform the direct current power generated by solar panels into alternating current electricity that is ready to be used. This power is then stored in batteries during the day for powering the lights during the night hours.

A light sensitive timer - Many solar power lights for outdoor use come with a light sensitive timer that switches them on when the sun begins to go down. This is a very good way of having an adequate lighting when people most need it and preserving the power during the day for the night when it is dark and you want lighting.

The lights themselves - This is where the variance element can actually play a role. There are lots of different solar power lights. An example on the large side of the range could be outdoor street light designs. Another example, this one on the smaller side of the scale, is solar power string lights, which can be small lamps designed for flower beds. Solar powered flood light is another alternative available for environmental-conscious businesses and homeowners.

The bulbs - Not always, but most of the time solar power lighting kits contain LED light bulbs. These bulbs are designed for maximum efficiency and require less electricity and last much longer than conventional incandescent designs. Depending on the design of the bulb, LED lighting systems can also provide more illumination. These bulbs are often the ones that are included in solar powered flood light kits.

It is generally accepted that solar power lights enhance and give more plenitude to any outdoor landscaping design regarding the outward appearance as well as the impact on the environment. Such autonomous solar power systems generate power during daylight hours, switch automatically on to illuminate the dark hours, and switch themselves off when the sun rises.

Given the autonomy of such self-contained solar systems, it’s understandable that more and more people are willing to try them. Solar power lights are a clean and effective way to illuminate the dark hours with a free energy that helps you save on your energy bills.
